Is this the prettiest thatched house in Norfolk? Property editor Caroline Culot went to visit Nether House, Strumpshaw Road, Brundall, for sale for £800,000 with Pymm & Co.
You only have to look at this house, tucked away in one of Norfolk’s most popular Broadland villages, Brundall, to understand its instant appeal.
It sits in pretty gardens with that immaculate thatch and those particularly striking ‘eyebrow’ windows and at the moment, boasts the most beautiful wisteria across its front covering it in mauve blossoms. It is for sale with Pymm & Co.
Stand anywhere close and you can enjoy that intoxicating fragrance that just smells of summer.
I visited on a hot day last week and remembered I had actually visited it when it came on the market about 11 years ago before the current owners fell in love with it and bought it. I’s not hard to see why they did; this house epitomises what many of us just love about properties in this county with its Norfolk reed thatched roof.
Nether House was built in 1905 and also typifies the Arts and Craft movement, built using natural materials in a substantial way without too many over fussy architectural details.
You have a sitting room with a fireplace and separate dining room, however, the owners have really enhanced the home by putting in a new kitchen and bathrooms/en suites as well as creating the most lovely outside space. You have a large kitchen/breakfast room which leads into the hall, off which are the receptions and a study with four bedrooms upstairs including a master with an en suite.
You can’t see the house from the road - I actually drove right past it - but once you go up the drive, you really feel like you are in your own little paradise. I know houses do look more appealing in the summer months when the outdoors is blooming but you can’t help but absolutely adore the gardens which envelop this property.
I took a good walk around outside which starts with a breakfast terrace outside the kitchen; bathed in the morning sun, it’s perfect for your coffee and croissants.
Then as you walk around the side you come to a new summer house and then the big reveal, the wisteria-clad, heavily scented front.
This is a beautiful home, which has been very much cared for by the owners who now are deciding to give someone else the privilege of owning a property that is proudly ‘Made in Norfolk.’
