Pork producer Cranswick said its underlying sales lifted 4pc in the three months to the end of June, compared to a year ago, boosted by lower input prices and higher volume sales to Far Eastern markets.

The Hull-based firm, founded in 1972, has a factory in Watton, and said due to its strong range of products it was confident of its prospects for the full-year.

The EDP Top 100 firm, which employs more than 1,000 people in Norfolk, sells products to a range of supermarkets.

In 2013, it signalled its return to the pig-rearing industry after snapping-up East Anglian Pigs (EAP).

The company bought the Little Melton business for an undisclosed fee to tighten its grip on the supply chain and increase its commitment to providing locally produced pork.
