Shoppers were stopped in their tracks by the sight of a 30ft-high Mr Stay Puft Marshmallow Man towering over buildings in London Road North on Tuesday.

The monster inflatable was in town to promote the 30th anniversary screening of Ghostbusters at Lowestoft's Marina Theatre tonight.

The event will also celebrate 30 years since cinema returned to Lowestoft with the launch of films at the Sparrows Nest Theatre.

In the film, Mr Stay Puft threatens New York City until he is destroyed by the Ghostbusters using their proton packs.

Martin Halliday, chief executive of the Marina Theatre Trust, said: 'It looked fabulous.

'A lot of people were out in the town and taking photos of it.

'I think tonight's screening is going to be fantastic and there will be a great atmosphere.'

The Marina encouraged people to submit pictures of themselves with Mr Stay Puft for the chance to win tickets to tonight's screening.

Ann Garrod, from Pakefield, was among the people who stopped to enjoy the spectacle.

She said: 'I think it is lovely and it is nice for Lowestoft to have something in town for the children during half term.

'I have seen the film. My grandson also saw if for the first time on Sunday and he thought it was lovely.'

Philip White, from Lowestoft, added: 'I love all the Ghostbusters and had a Ghostbusters outfit when I was a kid.

'I saw the inflatable from all the way down the street and instantly thought it was brilliant.'

The Mr Stay Puft inflatable belongs to avid Ghostbusters fan and collector Russ Palmer from Weston Super Mare.

Mr Palmer travelled to Lowestoft with his beloved piece of memorabilia accompanied by his mum Annie Palmer and her partner Chris Reason, who wore a Ghostbusters outfit and entertained the crowds by pretending to blast Mr Stay Puft with his proton pack.

The well-travelled inflatable has also made appearances in Germany and throughout the United Kingdom.

It has been signed on the back by Billy Bryan, who designed and wore the Mr Stay Puft costume in the original film.

Mr Palmer, 29, who is a member of professional costuming group UK Ghostbusters, said: 'I am a massive Ghostbusters fan. I have got a life-size Slimer, a Vigo painting and the containment unit from the film.

'I have had Mr Stay Puft for two years but I have been doing costuming for four years.

'I got massively in to props after doing the costuming and realised there was a whole wealth of bigger things I could own as a collector.

'It is nice to see him out and about. At the end of the day, there is no point owning something like that and never having it on display.'

? The special anniversary performance of Ghostbusters starts at 7.30pm. Advanced tickets cost £4 each. A fancy dress competition will also take place before the screening. Call the box office on 01502 533200 or visit www.marinatheatre.co.uk for more details.
