One of Eastern Europe's most celebrated chorus and dance troupes is heading for the East Coast.

The famous Red Army Chorus and Dance Ensemble from Russia have been booked to appear at the Marina Theatre in Lowestoft in October.

It is the latest coup for the 750-seat theatre which is also entertaining the Russian Cossack State Dance Company and the Moscow City Ballet and Orchestra before the end of the year.

Created in 1942, the Red Army Chorus has a firm foothold in Russian musical folklore, while the Dance Ensemble has received acclaim across the world for its high skills and artistry.

The Red Army's special pride is its soloists, and Sergey Baikov, a bass singer, has achieved the accolade of "People's Artist of Russia".

Meanwhile, the return of the Moscow City Ballet and Orchestra in November marks a significant event for the Edwardian theatre.

Their first visit three years ago is widely acknowledged as a turning point in the history of the theatre, which had, until then, survived mainly on a diet of tribute bands and adult comedians.

However, after the ballet's arrival, the Marina has played host to major productions from across the world, and is the current residence of the world famous Royal Philharmonic Orchestra - one of just two venues outside London.

Martin Halliday, venues manager at Waveney District Council, said the theatre would continue to try to attract large productions.

"I am delighted that we have, once again, secured a major international event in the shape of the Red Army Chorus and Dance Ensemble for the Marina," he said.

"This autumn, we welcome the return of the Russian State Cossack Dance Company, Moscow City Ballet and from New York, the world tour of Porgy and Bess.

"As long as the public support these productions, the Marina will continue to be able to offer one of the most varied programmes of live entertainment available on the East Coast."

The Red Army will be performing at the Marina on Friday, October 14, at 7.30pm.
