Fresh from its New York premiere, this enthralling Romanian musical fairy tale proved it has appeal for all ages.

Although at times is it thought- provoking, both youngsters and adults appeared transfixed by the light-hearted approach for what was quite an intense yet colourful production.

Playing the Flora, the youngest princess, was Karina Lucas. She had a wonderful stage presence and a singing voice to match. You found yourself following her traumatic path to true love with sheer admiration, and the audience did not lose the morals of her dilemma.

Playing Pig was Simon Wilding who portrayed the scary, stinky monster with panache, but when Flora finally broke the magic spell he was transformed into the perfect husband and king.

For children and adults this joint production with the ROH2, Young Vic and The Opera Group offers a thoroughly stimulating and entertaining evening. You see so many characteristics of human nature including jealousy and mistrust; but perhaps more importantly it highlights how through self-belief and kindness that love can conquer all.
