Awaiting the famous stage direction 'Exits, pursued by a bear' we were not disappointed. Nor was a dog in the audience. He even barked again two acts later when the bear was just mentioned!

Paul Baker gave a haunted and hunted jealousy to Leontes. Lawrie Hammond's lounge-lizard charm as Polixenes gave just enough ammunition to be suspected of adultery with Hermione. In that role Lucy Snowling was impressive in the trial scene.

Paulina is not usually a memorable part; but Vanessa Webster's intensity gave it a new life. George Ball and Mike Davison did great things with the characters of the old shepherd and clown.
