• Timon of Athens

Sewell Barn's latest production is Shakespeare's complex essay on avarice, misanthropy and vengeance. Ostentatious Timon loses a fortune, and with it a host of sycophants. In self-imposed exile, he finds a new fortune which brings the sycophants crawling back to him. But by then he has learnt to see through shallow flattery and helps purge Athens before his death. This modern dress, sparse production, co-written with Thomas Middleton, aims to show how the play's themes of greed, consumerism, credit, homelessness, mania, violence and urban rioting echo in contemporary Britain. It is a rare chance to share in the wonderful story of a seldom-performed Shakespeare updated to a modern setting.

Based on the well-loved Ealing comedy, the stage version of this British screen classic written by Norfolk-based comedy writer Graham Linehan has enjoyed great success. Here it is being staged by Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society. It tells the tale of a sweet little old widow pitted against a gang of criminal misfits who will stop at nothing. Posing as amateur musicians, Professor Marcus and his gang rent rooms in the house of the strictly moral Mrs Wilberforce, whilst they plan an audacious bank robbery. When she discovers what they are up to, Mrs Wilberforce is alone against five desperate men with only her parrot, General Gordon, to help her. But who will be forced to face the music?
