MICHAEL DRAKE King's Lynn Festival: King's Lynn Corn Exchange

MICHAEL DRAKE

The strings immediately brought impressive, rounded tone and emphatic rhythms to the Introduction and Allegro for Strings in this all-Elgar programme.

The centrepiece was the Cello Concerto in E minor, with the prodigious talent of BBC Young Musician of the Year, Guy Johnston. From the first draw of the bow in the dramatic solo opening, he was completely inside the music and transmitted it to an entranced audience. The adagio was full of excitement as the theme was tossed around from soloist to orchestra, resulting in a generous reception for the highest quality.

The programme ended with the Enigma Variations, brassy, wild, reflective, descriptive – the orchestra made each of the composer's friends come to life. Full marks for “artistic impression”; a few less perhaps for all-Elgar “presentation”.
