A world premiere is always a nail-biting moment. All the more so for a company like Improbable, who (as the name suggests) rely heavily on improvisation as a way of creating their work.
Their new play, The Paper Man, takes its first steps here at the Norfolk & Norwich Festival. It's clear that the devising process has led to a piece that is completely different from the one they envisaged.
At the centre of what they thought they were doing is a story about an Austrian footballer called Matthias Sindelar. He was probably killed by the Nazis for speaking out against them. But when Vera Chok, Jess Mabel Jones, Anna-Maria Nabirye and Adrienne Quartly get their hands on the material, it spins out into tales of their own heroic efforts to stand up against oppression.
Unexpected, but still good.
