Reverend and the Makers have been regular visitors to Norwich over the last decade. They’ve had some “good times in Norwich” as the band announced - they were even once supported by a young lad called Ed Sheeran (what happened to him?).

Promising “banger after banger” in the heavy rain I had flashbacks to my student days watching the Sheffield band perform in the Student Union venue.

This time the sticky floor had been replaced by wet grass, the cheap cider and post-gig burger had been replaced by a pricier food and drink combination, and the fans in the crowd (including myself) had all aged considerably.

Now on their sixth album McClure and the band’s music is as fresh as they were watching them at the LCR a decade ago... but he admits the music has adapted over the decade. As he put it to the crowd “who wants to eat a cheese sandwich all of their life?”

Lead singer Jon McClure - nicknamed the Reverend for being a loudmouth - did not disappoint during his banter with the audience during the set. Either we all had to bounce along to the music or move along to the hot dog stand. And he revealed he once had to write an apology to the King of Thailand for a track on his last album.

Like the Pied Piper, McClure led the crowd through rapturous singalong moments like Heavyweight Champion of the World, Miss Brown... and that one with the jingle from the Marmite advert in the 90s.

Three years ago this weekend I was stood in Earlham Park watching Foo Fighters at Radio 1’s Big Weekend wondering if the event would leave a legacy on the city for years to come.

The crowds that flocked to watch Reverend and the Makers and the other well-known indie names prove that there is appetite for even more outdoor gigs in our fine city.
