It's the day when music lovers and vinyl obsessive queue from dawn to snap up rarities and re-issues and prove that independent record shops still have a bright future.

Record Store Day takes place on April 21 and shops across Norfolk and the wider region will again be taking part to stock dozens of special limited edition releases.

Hundreds of record labels have once again come on board to deliver a huge array of special vinyl products to celebrate the diverse and unique culture of the UK's independent record shops.

Over 240 shops nationally will be taking part in what's now the 11th edition of Record Store Day – the largest number of participating stores so far.

Many of the shops taking part will have special in-store events to coincide with the day.

Those taking part locally include Soundclash Records on St Benedict's Street in Norwich, Holt Vinyl Vault on Cromer Road in Holt, Lewks in Downham Market, and Vinyl Hunter on St John's St in Bury St Edmunds.

Among the hundreds of one-off releases, some of the most in-demand items are set to be previously unreleased records by David Bowie, a recording of The National playing Boxer live in full in Brussels and a 20th anniversary reissue of Suede's self-titled album on silver vinyl.

The Maccabees Wall Of Arms is released on picture disc, as well as exclusives from the likes of The Cure, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Tom Waits, Sigrid, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Courtney Barnett, four release from Iceland's Sigur Ros, Rage Against The Machine, and Joy Division — under their original name of Warsaw.

Here are 10 rarities and oddities also well worth searching out…

Antony Gormley

Sounds of the Studio

(Gearbox Records)

Norfolk-residing Turner Prize winning British sculptor Antony Gormley is an unlikely Record Store Day subject, but London jazz label Gearbox Records have created this sound portrait of his cathedral-like studio in all its working glory. It captures the sounds that emanate from the hammers, grinders, fans and welders involved in making the magic happen. This is a proper oddity.

Michael Raven and Joan Mills

Death And The Lady

(Sunbeam)

One of the rarest of all 70s British folk albums, this darkly beautiful record has never been available on vinyl since the first pressing of just 250 copies was pressed in 1972. It released with an insert telling the story behind the album, with rare photos. A beautiful lost classic rarity and a must for all folk fans.

David Bowie

Let's Dance (Demo)

(PLG UK)

Three limited edition Bowie albums for RSD 2018 including triple unreleased live set Welcome To The Blackout - Live London '78, the first commercial release of a rare 1977 US only compilation Bowie Now, and this 12' featuring full length demo version and live version of Let's Dance, previously only released on download to celebrate Bowie's birthday.

The Waterfront

Normandy (On A Beach)/When The Wind Blows

(Vinyl Revival)

The Waterfront were a short lived early 80s pre-cursor to The Stone Roses, consisting of three original members of the Roses; Andy Couzens, Gary Mounfield and John Squire. The drummer was Chris Goodwin (later of The High) with David ' Kaiser' Carty on vocals. Although the band never played a gig they did record these two super rare tracks.

Bobbie Gentry

Live at the BBC

(UMC/Virgin EMI)

First official release of this by the legendary Mississippi country singer-songwriter and sure to be highly sought after and collectable. No BBC material featuring Bobbie has ever been released (and only Ode to Billie Joe has leaked on to YouTube as it featured in a BBC doc about songwriters) so these recordings will be completely unfamiliar to fans.

ABBA

Summer Night City

(UMC)

'I love the feeling in the air, my kind of people everywhere'; 40 years this year since it was released as a single it is available again in a super limited edition reissue of just 2,000. Highlighted as one of RSD 2018's most desirable releases, this 7' single version is sure to be highly sought after, so be quick as when they're gone, they're gone.

Serge Gainsbourg

Le Pacha (OST)

(Wewantsounds)

First ever complete release on vinyl of this landmark soundtrack from 1967 featuring the cult classic Requiem Pour Un Con with the man himself in low slung, smoked-out jazz mode. Also includes a never-released instrumental mix plus two very rare tracks from the Mister Freedom soundtrack (1968).

Arcade Fire

Arcade Fire EP

(Legacy/Sony Music)

Arcade Fire's debut 12' EP is being released for the very first time with a blue coloured, individually numbered EP, augmented with gold artwork. It was previously only available on CD at live dates, so expect demand for this rarity to be very, very high.

The Undertones

Singles Box

(USM)

Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the John Peel all time favourite single Teenage Kicks (1978) a box of magnificently crafted pop-punk singles, including all 13 of the classic Feargal Sharkey era singles and hits. Original single artwork is replicated and masters cut from original analogue tapes included.

António Sanches

Buli Povo!

(Analog Africa)

Revered reissue label Analog Africa, who specialise in unearthing afro classics, deliver a long awaited but RSD limited edition reissue of Antonio Sanches' Buli Povo, a 1983 LP which fuses out of space synthesizers, electric guitar pedals and all kinds of studio magic to creatre far out Funana? funk, African rhythms and Portuguese instrumentals.
