Panto spoof at city pubs

While the Christmas excesses may leave some punters seeing pink elephants, drinkers in Norwich will find themselves slipping into the fantasy world of Narnia.

While the Christmas excesses may leave some punters seeing pink elephants, drinkers in Norwich will find themselves slipping into the fantasy world of Narnia.

Panto characters from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe will descend on city pubs to entertain drinkers with a stripped down comedy blast of the CS Lewis classic.

While families rush to the cinemas to catch the new Disney movie on the big screen, the Crude Apache Theatre Company will be bringing highlights from the enchanted tale to punters for free.

At just 30 minutes long, the spoof show Four Go Mad in Narnia promises gags a plenty, quick costume changes and send-ups of pantomime clichés.

The five stars of this pub panto will rely on their acting skills to bring unicorns, centaurs and talking animals to life and wow the crowds.

Set during the Second World War, the story follows the four Pevensie children - Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy - who are evacuated from London to a country house.

During their stay they stumble on the magic wardrobe, a portal to a parallel world which has been in permanent winter for 100 years. It is ruled by an evil white witch, but the arrival of the four children raises hopes that the benevolent lion Aslan will return to power.

Crude Apache actor Russell Turner, 42, said: “Our show will basically be a light-hearted pastiche on the classic CS Lewis tale. We will be bringing 30 minutes of silliness to pubs around Norwich and hopefully cheering up the punters.

“We wanted to do something a bit different and we have come up with this. We decided to do a spoof of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe because it is on at the cinema at the moment and it was just begging to be sent up. There are five of us in the production but we will be covering 10 characters so there will be a lot of mix and matching of parts and quick changes. We have been in rehearsals for about a month.

“The show will be free, but we will be passing around a bucket to cover our costs and hopefully raise some money for future Crude Apache productions.”

Four Go Mad in Narnia is written and directed by Mr Russel, Jo Moore and Dani Doughty.
