A dramatic tale of grief and love will be performed at a school theatre by a long-running opera group.

The North Norfolk Chamber Opera will be showing Orpheus and Euridice at the Auden Theatre, Gresham's School, Holt, between Wednesday April 2-Saturday April 5 at 7.30pm.

Written by Gluck, who died in 1787, the opera is based on Greek mythology and was first performed in Vienna on October 5 1762.

The production, which revolutionised opera in the 18th century, follows the story of musician Orpheus who becomes grief-stricken after his wife Euridice is bitten by a snake and taken into the underworld.

The Greek God Amor allows Orpheus to enter the underworld and rescue his love, as long as he does not look at her.

Despite failing his challenge, the musician rescues his wife and the opera finishes on a happy note.

The traditional show features a cast of more than 20 people.

Live music will be provided by the North Norfolk Chamber Orchestra and Baroque dancing will be performed by the Norwich Historic Dance Group, led by Sasza Zargowski.

Orpheus is played by Karen Harries; Euridice by Lizzie Willmot and Jayne Burch; and Amor is played by Samantha Hawkins and Melissa Sampson. The musical director is Maggi Warren.

The amateur opera group started about 26 years ago. More male singers are needed.
