St Andrew's Hall in Norwich hosts a varied programme from the Norwich School Choral Society, writes Christopher Smith
Under Richard Allain and accompanied by the London Mozart Players, who were giving some of the more advanced pupils valuable orchestral experience, Norwich School Choral Society with students, parents and friends confidently presented an enterprising and varied programme in St Andrew's Hall on Wednesday evening.
A deft and assured performance of Mozart's Coronation Mass came first. Sam Kibble, a former pupil, took the tenor solos, and Rosamund Walton sang the beautiful Agnus Dei. Caitlin Obee, who is preparing for her A levels, gave a fluent and assured account of the Flute Concerto by Cecile Chaminade.
Impressive in Vaughan Williams' Mystical Songs, the baritnone Dhilan Gnanadurai was equally successful in the contrasting style of Feel the Spirit, John Rutter's arrangement of spirituals. The message rang out as the singers responded with a will to human emotions powerfully expressed with rhythmic vigour, vivid instrumental colour and great tunes.
