Comedy, music and magic with a North Walsham twist promise to provide fun for all the family, in the Pop up People's Theatre production of the classic pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk, which runs at the Black Swan pub in the town from December 21-24.

The show is written and directed by north Norfolk theatre professional Joseph Ballard, who will also be taking a starring role, with James Turner playing the twin roles of panto dame Celia Spriggins and Jack.

A cast of local adults will be supported by members of North Norfolk Youth Theatre and local group Dance for Fun.

'Christmas is a great time to experience live performance as a treat for the family and pantomime is a great British tradition which we should be proud of,' Mr Ballard said.

The show tells the tale of young Jack, who climbs to the top of a beanstalk grown from some magic beans.

After meeting some comic characters along the way, the intrepid traveller faces the greedy Giant Netherspoon in his quest to save Gill and find his way home.

The pantomime will run at North Walsham Pop Up People's Theatre, which was launched in the function room of the Black Swan pub last month with a 'spooky season' of Halloween plays, ghost walks and cabaret.

It is produced by New Stages, which was set up by Mr Ballard and a group of volunteers to offer acting classes and performing opportunities to children and adults in the North Walsham area.

The group also runs North Walsham People's Choir, which meets weekly at Sacred Heart Church hall.

'We started the Pop up People's Theatre to present top shows in the town centre, producing live theatre in the town and for the town,' Mr Ballard said.

'I have worked in panto in many different places across the UK but there's nothing quite like performing on your home turf; no matter where you live it's important to celebrate and support locally-made theatre.'

Jack and the Beanstalk, presented by New Stages, runs at the Pop up People's Theatre, at the Black Swan, Black Swan Loke, from December 21-24. Show times are 7pm(matinees at 2pm on December 22-24). Tickets, priced £7 (Under 3s free), are available from the Showcase Gallery, in North Walsham Market Place, or from www.new-stages.co.uk
