A guitarist whose music has been heard all over the world has returned to his home county and blues-rock roots to re-launch his band and release a new album.

Ron Sayer is well known for his covers band, music teaching, and most recently as bass player to young blues man Oli Brown who is one of Ron's former pupils.

He has also written 60 instrumental albums for an international music company, and been musical director at Sheringham's panto.

But the 41-year-old from North Walsham, who began playing the guitar aged seven, has now revived his Ron Sayer Junior band, for an album of his original songs, and is taking to the road playing live.

The 12-track Better Side album contains a range of his favourite songs showpiecing his guitar skills in a mix of blues, rock, funk, ballads, boogies and even calypso.

'It is a combination of the sounds of guitarists I like, not just another blues album,' he said.

Ron's first musical instrument as a was a keyboard his parents bought him - but he quickly realised 'you cannot pose in front of the mirror with a keyboard,' and hankered for a guitar.

'They said they would buy me one if I could play something properly on the keyboard. I learned the Starwars theme within hours and got my guitar.'

After his first gig aged 12 with the Panthers, he went on to play in a range of bands including his own Ron Sayer Band, and the Spider Murphy duo with wife Charlotte, playing cover songs at mainly local venues.

In 1996 he also won the Guitarist Magazine guitarist of the year competition on one of the rare occasions he admits to suffering from nerves on stage.

'I have never not enjoyed playing music at gigs - whether it is supporting Buddy Guy in Quebec or playing off the back of a trailer in North Walsham,' he said.

After going a music degree in 1997 he taught at Aylsham High School and Paston College before forming the original Ron Sayer Junior band in 2010 to do his own material.

The same year he joined the Oli Brown band alongside the former Sco Ruston man who has now moved to Yorkshire, on a touring schedule which took around Europe, the USA, Canada and even New Zealand. Ron also co-wrote half of the tracks of Oli's new Here I Am album.

He has now left the band to revive his own band and career, and also to spend more time with his young family - Jasmine 10 and Jadon eight.

The revived Junior band includes wife Charlotte on backing vocals, Andy 'Mojo' Johnson on keyboards, Clive H Jones on bass and Paul Wooden on drums.

The Better Side album is out on February 27, and the band's live gigs see them coming to the Norwich Waterfront on June 27 supporting German blues man Henrik Freischlader.
