All the fun and colour of the fair is set to burst into life in the centre of King's Lynn this week when the historic Mart is given its traditional St Valentine's Day opening.

King's Lynn and West Norfolk Borough mayor Kathy Mellish will on Thursday declare the Mart open in a traditional ceremony going back centuries. Mrs Mellish will be joined by about 15 mayors and chairmen from around the eastern region for the 12 noon ceremony.

Visitors to the Mart are this year promised a white-knuckle ride to remember when they step aboard the Booster. The ride, an updated version of the old dive-bomber, is believed to be the biggest ride in the fair.

The Booster is considered to be the star attraction of the Mart and members of the Showmen's Guild are delighted it is being brought to the town.

Tony Parkin, vice-chairman of the eastern region of the Showmen's Guild, said of the new attraction: "This ride will be a white-knuckle experience to remember for those going on it. This is the daddy, this is the beast," he said.

The Mart will be in Lynn until February 26 and children's day, when the rides are at reduced prices, will be on Friday.
