Prior to the gig, the band took a moment to answer some of my questions.
Hi guys, thanks first of all for taking to answer some our questions, could you please introduce yourselves and what you play in the band?
Hi! We are:
Brian Briggs ornithologist and singer/guitarist
Jon Ouin linguist and keyboardist/cellist
Oli Steadman chemist and bassist
Rob Steadman painter and drummer
For people who maybe haven't heard of you yet, can you describe what your sound is?
Folky English Soul... We sing true human stories over an acoustic guitar and varying accompaniment. Lately we've been playing a lot of qanun and dulcimer - Middle Eastern instruments you can hear in our single 'Knock Me On The Head'
You're currently going through a huge 25-date UK tour, how's touring been so far?
Getting out on the road is the best feeling. Exploring new places with your friends and meeting all the people who listen to your music... It took us 2 years in a frozen shed on a hill in Oxford, making our album, so it's been brilliant emerging for some extensive touring, just in time for Spring. We're most looking forward to the USA in May.
You're second album came out last week with already great reviews, how was it putting together the 'difficult second album'?
We had to build our own studio in an abandoned hilltop shack in East Oxford. We cleared it out, built a drum platform out of fruitboxes, covered the walls with B&Q offcuts and filled it with exotic instruments from Asia and the Steadman Bro's home country of South Africa. It took 2 years and thousands of cups of tea but we're happy with what that room produced. It's awesome playing it to people now at gigs and festivals.
You play at OPEN on Friday the 15th, what can people expect from the live performance?
We've been waiting for a return to Norwich since Valentine's Day 2010 - can't wait! We'll arrive in town with a giant moon, 9 guitars, a 2x4 dowel to saw on stage, and over 200 individual strings on our instruments. Hopefully we'll leave with a few more friends and a couple fewer signed vinyls...! See you there.
