It was a coup to attract Elaine Delmar, who combines captivating vocal beauty with charisma and considerable ebullience for the opening night of the 37th Gorleston Festival of Music and the Arts.

In an evening of nostalgic numbers by Gershwin and Cole Porter, Miss Delmar was accompanied by a superb jazz quartet headed by legendary drummer and band leader Jack Parnell, which also featured virtuoso trumpeter Bruce Adams.

The first half of the programme was devoted to the work of Gershwin, the second to that of Cole Porter. It was in this latter half of the programme that Miss Delmar bewitched and beguiled her audience with her exquisite articulation and beautiful upper vocal register. Her interpretations of the romantic numbers of Cole Porter were sublime, and, almost caressing the audience with her voice, Miss Delmar left them drooling for more.

This was a wonderful opening to the festival and a foretaste of the delight to follow.
