ALISON CROOSE King's Lynn Corn Exchange
ALISON CROOSE
> King's Lynn Corn Exchange
The orchestra launched its eighth season at Lynn with such a plethora of musical treats it was no surprise the concert was a sell-out.
The CLS are always a delight to listen to, but add world-famous percussionist Evelyn Glennie and top cellist Julian Lloyd Webber and the evening became even more special.
This was a sparkling programme spanning four centuries. The tone was set by the baroque masterpiece Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No 3, before the audience was mesmerised by the magical combination of the orchestra's strings with Glennie's vibraphone-playing in her transcription of Vivaldi's Concerto in C Major.
She then switched to the unique sound of the marimba for a fascinating arrangement by Karl Jenkins of La Folia by Corelli, which had its world premiere two days earlier.
Haydn's Cello Concerto in C major, unearthed in 1962, was given the treatment expected of a master when Lloyd Webber displayed his virtuosity in a performance enhanced by his rapport with the orchestra.
The two stars joined forces for an exciting adaptation for cello and marimba of Vivaldi's Concerto in G Minor. Another Corelli work, a beautiful Concerto Grosso, rounded off a memorable evening.
