A classic car run celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Jaguar E-Type and its Norfolk-born creator has had to change its start point because of the huge amount of interest from enthusiasts wanting to take part.

The E-Type 50th Anniversary Run taking place around Norfolk on Saturday has seen the number of cars signed up to the event swell to about 35 - and among the people taking part is former race and rally driver Jack Sears who raced the E-Type in the very year it was launched.

The run had been due to start at The Forum in Norwich on Saturday but the venue has now been changed to the Norwich City Football Club, in Carrow Road, where the collection of motoring masterpieces will be on display to the public for about an hour before the convoy sets off at 10am.

Event organiser Kip Bertram, who founded the book empire Bertram Books with his mother Elsie, said the event would be a great celebration of what he described as the most beautiful moving creature in the world after Concorde.

He said: 'I had hoped to have about 20 Jaguar E-Types join in with the run but I am astounded to have 35 taking part. There will be E-Types from Series 1, 2 and 3 including roadsters and coupes.

'There are people from Northampton, Essex and Suffolk taking part but most are from Norfolk. I am astounded to know how many E-Types there are in Norfolk.'

Mr Sears, known as Gentleman Jack and who won the first British Touring Car Championship in 1958 and again in 1963, will be a passenger in an E-Type belonging to James Paterson on the day.

Mr Sears, who raced an E-Type in national GT (Grand Touring) races in the year the car was launched, said: 'It will be fun to see all the E-Types there. It shall bring back many happy memories of my time racing an E-Type.

'I have always loved E-Types and thought what a beautiful line they have. They have never aged over the years. If you were to look at a well-kept E-Type today you would think it was just made last year.'

Saturday's journey which will see the Jaguar E-Types travel from Norwich to Aylsham and stop at Blicking Hall before heading to Cromer, where E-Type creator Malcolm Sayer once lived, and then onto The Vernon Arms at Southrepps for lunch. After this the convoy will head to Rollesby Broad and finish at Mr Bertram's home in Bergh Apton.

The Jaguar E-Type was launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 1961 and went on to become arguably the most famous sports car of all time,

It was manufactured by Jaguar between 1961 and 1975 and during this time more than 70,000 E-Types were sold.

Any money made from the E-Type 50th Anniversary Run will be given to the Norfolk Diabetes Appeal.

• The Jaguar E-Types will be on display at Norwich City Football Club in Carrow Road from about 8.45am until 10am on Saturday.
