MICHAEL DRAKE
Salle Church
This "can't miss" musical event reached its 20th year on Saturday, and in the perfect acoustic of the church, the orchestra (leader, Paul Clarke) under debut conductor Simon Bowler were in fine form. In a well-balanced programme, over-riding was the clarity from all instruments.
Soloist in the following trumpet concerto was Ray Simmons and the trumpet entered with shining tone. Some of Haydn's best-known tunes in the other move-ments culminated in a bright and breezy finale. Strings, cor anglais and trumpet featured in the smoky and desolate atmosphere created in Copland's concert piece Quiet City. In Mozart's "Prague" Symphony No 38, the orchestra achieved a dramatic, operatic, opening, continuing with an elegant andante and a presto finale.
A vintage symphony from a vintage academy.
