A good sized Norfolk contingent travelled down to The Berkshire Golf Club for one of the big amateur events of the year - but only two made it through to the matchplay stages.

King's Lynn's Jack Yule posted two 71s to finish tied 45th after two rounds of strokeplay in the English Amateur Championship, while James Biggs of Diss was one shot behind after following a 71 with a 72.

Yule went out in the first round of matchplay yesterday after losing 3&1 to Clevedon's Alister Balcombe while Biggs saw off Mark Collins of Chart Hills by one shot before going out to Sherborne's Thomas Plumb 3&2 at the second stage.

Thetford's Giles Evans missed out on the knock-out stages by five shots after two rounds of 73 while the other local scores were: Calvin Sherwood (Rookery Park) 71 75, Tom Beasley (Hunstanton) 78 70, Josh Driver (Diss) 76 73, Chris Bartram (Diss) 74 75, Luke Thompson (Rookery Park) 74 76, and Guy Mummery (80, retired).

The event reaches its conclusion on Sunday.
