Wymondham kept their dream of a Twickenham appearance alive when they comfortably beat Kent side Beccehamian in the semi-finals of the London and SE Junior Vase.

James Wyatt kicked a penalty to give the hosts an early advantage and stretched their lead 10 minutes later when Alex Wigney produced a series of side-steps before touching down, with Wyatt's conversion making it 10-0.

Beccehamians reduced the deficit with a penalty but Wymondham then started to raise their game and good driving play by Chris Miller, Dave Blake, Tony Wishart and Dane Canning forced the visitors back. They scored again when a dummy run by Alex Brugger gave Dave Martin enough room to outflank the defence and score out wide. This was converted by Wyatt and brought the score to 17-3 after 32 minutes.

Then, from a scrum on the hosts' 22m line, the ball was fed out to Steve Simms who fed Tom Wilson for the centre to go on a marvellous break. He chose the inside route and Simms scored another good try for the hosts which was converted.

A Wymondham player was then yellow carded for going off his feet at a breakdown but the hosts still scored next when Josh Wright charged at the visitors' defence with Nick Ferns in close support. When given the ball the centre released Martin to score his second try, converted by Wyatt, increasing the lead to 31-3 at half-time.

Beccehamians started to play a tighter game with their big forwards and No 8 trying to break through the 14-man defence but Henry Petch and Andy Mackay were driving the bigger men back. Nuemi Rokodonin and the back row then won loose ball and Martin was again released to complete his hat-trick, Wyatt converting.

Wymondham continued to thwart the opposition in the loose and tight and this pressure paid off when a loose ball from a Beccehamian scrum on their own 22m line was pounced on by Wyatt to score a try which he duly converted.

Beccehamians were still being pinned in their own half and from a quickly taken penalty Simms fed Mackay to score a try which the back row triumvate deserved for their performance in the match, Wyatt missed the conversion.

Beccehamians had played a strong game in good spirit and were determined to get some more rewards for their efforts.

After a period of pressure again they scored a good try through their flanker which was converted to bring the final score to 50-10.

Wymondham now host Farnham in the London SE Junior Vase Final at Tuttles Lane on March 16. The Surrey outfit have had a good season and lead Surrey One, having only lost one game all season.

The winner of that one will face Newent of the Forest of Dean in the National Junior Vase semi-final at a neutral venue on March 30 with the winners of that game set to play at Twickenham.
