The heroes of Wisbech Town are faced with just one more challenge in their quest to create cricket history.

The Capital of the Fens club lifted their first-ever Cambs Tucker Premier League title since it began in 1979 by beating fierce rivals March Town on Saturday.

And just 24 hours later the Harecroft Road men were at it again as they edged Essex outfit Frinton to qualify for today's East Anglian Premier League play-off final.

A victory at Norfolk Alliance Premier Division champions Norwich would see Wisbech promoted to the highest level in the club's history. And batting stalwart Gary Freear admits it's a massive afternoon for everyone connected with one of the area's best-known teams.

Freear told our West Norfolk Sports Podcast: 'I think as a club we've sort of gone as far as we can in the Cambs League. We now need to test ourselves, we've got some very talented players, at a higher level.

'Us going up into the Premier League, hopefully, will encourage the seconds, thirds, and fourths to gradually move up their leagues as well. It will strengthen the whole club.

'No doubt there would be two or three players locally, if we do get into the Premier League, that would be looking to try themselves at that level so I think we'd be able to grab a couple of players. But I also think it would improve the whole standard of the club.

'I think we'd probably be looking to get a good pro in who would probably do a lot of coaching and bring on the younger side of the club as well.

'It's been our goal (to get promoted) for three years. It's a fantastic league, it's one of the best leagues in the country and it's literally as far as Wisbech can go at the minute.'

While Wisbech pipped Ramsey to their league title on the season's final day, same-level Norwich also saw off main title rivals Downham Town to give themselves another chance of rejoining the region's elite.

The city club, who won the EAPL in 2000 and 2001, were founder members of the league when it started in 1999. They were relegated in 2011 and missed out on an immediate return by losing last year's promotion shoot-out against Woolpit by five runs.

However, despite their opponents lifting back-to-back Alliance titles, Wisbech captain Alan Burton doesn't think his troops will be the underdogs at Postwick (10.30am start).

Burton told the WNSP: 'We've proved to people how strong a side we are. Underestimating us would be an unwise thing to do.

'Both teams have got some big game players and match winners. I think the team that turns up and plays best as a unit will come out on top.'
