Willard wins Norfolk County Singles Championships

Nigel Willard made up for last year's last bowl defeat to win the Norfolk County Singles Championships at Lakeside against Kim Bridge.

Bridge became only the second female player to reach the Norfolk Singles final in the history of the championships and took first blood scoring a single on the first end but Willard levelled the game on the second end. Bridge heit back to make it 2-1 but Willard rallied to go into the lead himself.

Willard held three shots after playing three woods on the next end but Bridge responded with a perfect forehand to take shot and then drew in another wood to take a 4-3 lead.

Two superb bowls by Bridge left her Carter team-mate in all kinds of trouble on the seventh end and she finished off a fabulous end by drawing in a third bowl to lead 7-5. On what should have been the penultimate end Bridge set a short jack again but failed to reach the live area with her first bowl but Willard failed to take full advantage as he went too long with his opening wood.

Bridge then delivered two super woods on to the jack forcing Willard to attack to good effect as he took shot and cut the lead to 7-6. The last scheduled end saw Willard set a long jack again but he hit the block with his opening bowl. Bridge then drew shot but Willard was in with his second wood. Bridge then again regained shot while Willard lost his next bowl into the ditch. With Willard staring defeat in the face he produced an absolutely perfect backhand to take shot with his last wood and level the game at 7-7. The extra sudden death end saw Bridge set another short jack and draw a perfect toucher onto the jack.

Willard drew just behind with his first wood while Bridge drew in a second bowl. Willard then used weight to leave both players with one bowl in contention for shot. Bridge then drew in a lovely wood to hold two shots while Willard had the final bowl still to play. Willard came into Bridge's bowls with a weighted shot that pushed the jack back to leave him holding two shots to claim the Single title.

Defending Bure League champions Halvergate won 8-2 at Anglian Windows where Josh Baxter, David Lamb & Jack Barrett all skipped their triples to victory. Leaders East Tuddenham won 10-0 at home to Thorpe Marriott whilst Windows went down 10-0 at Kirby Bedon where Selwyn Goldsmith's triple won 24-5 and Phil Watson won 20-9. Woodbastwick won 6-4 at home to Coltishall.
