White admits recent failings have hurt the players in King’s Lynn Town’s dressing room

It was easy to see the despair at how King's Lynn Town's season has finished by looking at Danny White on Monday.

Sitting on the floor at the final whistle, with his arms wrapped around his knees, the midfielder looked soul-destroyed. The pain of recent failings was simply written all over his face.

He wasn't the only one in Lynn colours to be wearing an expression of disappointment and regret that a season that promised so much eventually delivered so little – for the second season running.

Captain Ross Watson, centre-back Stuart Wall and right-back Ashley Deeney, to name but three, collected their League Cup runners-up medal and instantly gave them to a supporter from their club.

Weeks after falling at the final hurdle in the league to finish behind Long Buckby, Lynn failed to go out on a high by losing the Bank Holiday showcase against St Ives Town. White admits going down with a whimper during a 4-1 defeat was hard for an already morale-shattered dressing room to handle.

He said: 'We'd have liked to have gone out on a high after finishing second in the league. We've let the manager, ourselves and the fans down recently and we wanted to put on a performance against St Ives. Unfortunately we weren't able to do that.

'We went 1-0 up through a good goal from Beauy (Danny Beaumont), they equalised, and we knew their centre-forward (Washington) was a good player. But we were still in the game. Then they got up for it and we just rolled over to be honest.

'Their goal (at 1-1) sucked the wind out of us, but we tend to get our noses in front and then I don't know whether we panic or what. We've got to start playing more sensibly. We've got some good passers in the side and we need to start passing the ball more.'

Lynn's first defeat since September came just three weeks ago on April 14 against Long Buckby. They were 1-0 up and lost 2-1. Their third defeat in UCL competition of what has still been a fantastic season, for 95pc of the campaign at least, came on Monday as Conor Washington's rampant display drove a dagger even deeper into Lynn's already wounded hearts.

White said: 'The last few weeks have hurt us. Individually, and as a group. It's taken a lot out of us.

'It's been a long season but like last year we're the 'nearly men' again. Everyone's down. Setch didn't have to come in and have a go after the game on Monday. We're all distraught at how the season's ended.

'To be honest we're all playing for our futures and we've let the management down badly in this last couple of weeks. We've got that to think about now during the summer too.

'There'll definitely be soul searching, massively. Depending on what happens at the club, there could be new faces coming in and possibly people going out, but hopefully I'll still be here for as long as possible. I'll always give 100pc and that's all I can offer.'

After their side eventually rolled over so tamely in their fight for the title and League Cup, fans will hope all those in Lynn colours will adopt White's mentality next season.
