Norfolk amateurs Scott Cruickshank and Spencer Humphrey-Moore, just 15, are one step closer to a round of a lifetime with a European Tour star after winning through a regional final of the Bridgestone Chase Your Dream Trophy.

Cruickshank, a 15.3 handicapper from Wensum Valley, and Humphrey-Moore, who plays out of Diss, kept alive their dreams of a place in the pro-am of the British Masters when they qualified at Mid Herts Golf Club.

The pair will now head to England Golf Week in August at Frilford Heath, Oxfordshire for the national finals of an event run in partnership with England Golf.

The top players will play in the pro-am of the Bridgestone Challenge and the winning team there will make a date for the British Masters.

Last year, the three overall winners partnered Ryder Cup player Nicolas Colsaerts at the pro-am of the British Masters at Close House.

Cruickshank, who scored a net 68 in qualifying on the St Albans course, has only been playing for 18 months and was shocked by his performance at Mid Herts.

'I never even expected to do so well,' he said. 'My aim was just to finish in the top 50. To finish as high as I did, on a course that was full of hazards, was fantastic.'

The 36-year-old has begun planning his preparation for the next round: 'One of my best mates is a professional and we're going to spend a lot of time practicing my driving.

'He's also caddying for me so I hope that he's my good luck charm. We're both really excited for Frilford and – hopefully- beyond!'

Humphrey-Moore, who scored a net 70 on the same course, said he had to adapt his game to get into the next round.

'I've got a tendency, like most golfers, to try and hit the ball as hard as I can but Mid Herts really isn't like that,' he explained.

'I carefully plotted my way round the course, ensuring I placed it, and it's clearly worked.'

The teenager flew to Tunisia following the round and said: 'I'm actually going out there to play more golf – it'll be the perfect place to practice my putting in preparation for Frilford Heath.

'I really hope I get to the British Masters, it'll be a real dream come true!'

Eaton's head PGA professional Mark Allen fared best of the county contingent at West Essex, finishing tied 16th in the 80-man field.

Allen fired rounds of 70 and 75 to end up on five-over-par. That left him eight shots back from Little Channels Golf Centre professional Jason Levermore who defeated Glen Portelli at the third play-off hole.

Chase Davis of Marriott Sprowston Manor was four shots behind Allen after rounds of 74 and 75.
