The man behind the return of boxing to the Norwich sporting calendar says he would be 'mad' not to come back to the city.

Mervyn Turner has already pencilled in a November fight night –with Norwich heavyweight Sam Sexton added to the bill – and intends to return with a full series of events next year following the successful Homecoming show at the Norfolk Showground on Saturday.

A clutch of local boxers were on the bill, headlined by Cromer brothers Michael and Ryan Walsh, who produced two stunning displays to send the fans home happy.

'These fans are terrific,' said Turner, who runs the Bedfordshire-based Shamrock Promotions business. 'I spend a lot of time in Norfolk because I have a business just outside the city and these fans are the best in the country.

'I would be mad not to come back. We can build on this, but more importantly for us it is about building a stable up here, with (trainer) Graham Everett and also building up a promotional stable in Norfolk and giving the young amateurs, and there are loads of amateur clubs in the county, something to aspire to. A lot of them were here watching. All it takes is a spark and I hope we have provided Norfolk with that spark.

'When we come back in November we will see if that's true – I am sure it will be, and that bodes well for next year because we want a series of shows. This is not a one-off, we want to be promoting shows here regularly. How could you not come to Norfolk?'

The Walsh brothers, Nathan Dale and Scott Moises will feature in November as well as former Commonwealth champion Sexton.

'We want to get a nice local bill together again – Sam Sexton is one and we have also had talks with a few boxers this evening so I am sure we will put a full bill of Norfolk boxers on,' said Turner.

A crowd just under 1,000-strong were at Saturday's event in a city which has been notoriously short of suitable venues in the past.

'The first show is always difficult,' Turner added. 'We came to Norfolk knowing that would happen because there hasn't been small time boxing for a long time. For a small promoter like myself to come here is very, very difficult. However, I think the Showground have done us proud.'
