Norwich's new on loan keeper Tony Warner admitted nothing beats the matchday buzz after his winning Barnsley debut.

Warner was fast tracked straight into the starting line up after a whirlwind 48 hours following a season long loan switch from Premiership outfit Fulham.

The bubbly Scouser is determined to grab his chance after surviving a couple of heart stopping moments at Oakwell.

“There is no substitute for playing games,” said the 32-year-old, Peter Grant's fourth recruit between the sticks this season. “I'm really glad to be at Norwich. I hadn't played for months and my feet haven't touched, to be honest.

“The call came Thursday afternoon. I had to make a decision, get my gear together and get in the car. It's a fresh start for me although it's too early to say what might happen in the future. I've only played one game and it's gone really well but we've still got 12 or 13 left.

“Fulham is a great club but if you're not playing you want to be somewhere else. I went out to Leeds and started off well this season. Then there was a change of manager who had his own ideas and wanted to bring in someone else.”

Warner's brilliant late reaction block to foil Hungarian dangerman Istvan Ferenczi was the headline act of his encouraging debut.

“A save's a save,” he joked. “The lad headed it against me and I'm just there. You need a little bit of luck sometimes although you make your own and maybe I was in the right position. I was very impressed with the lads - especially the two centre halves.

“It's not that hard to come in unless the side is set up to do something differently; without two centre halves and two full backs in front of you. People already know who they're supposed to be marking and so on. It's not down to me.

“The most difficult thing is remembering the names. I know they're on the back of the shirts these days but they can be quite long winded and no one's ever called by their proper names.”

Warner's 'settling in' period was extended by a first half attacking masterclass from his new mates.

“It was a little bit surprising,” he said. “I knew we were in for a hard game because we got beat here with Leeds earlier in the season. They play a high tempo and with a strong following behind them it can be tough.

“The only disappointment was conceding so close to half time. We knew they would try to up it and press us back which made it a little bit nervy second half.”
