Great Yarmouth Town made it six wins in a row after beating Downham Town 3-2 to keep up their promotion challenge.

But the Bloaters needed all their fighting qualities as they were twice forced to come from behind at The Rec.

They trailed after 15 minutes when Yates headed home from a corner, although they were soon on level terms, skipper Robin Andersen firing home from close range.

But Downham took the lead for a second time, after 26 minutes, when Willmott sprinted through the defence and finished well.

Back came Yarmouth and when Chris McAra was fouled on the edge of the penalty area, Declan McAvoy stepped up and from his free-kick, Holmes pounced to put the Bloaters level at 2-2.

With half-time approaching Sean Perfect produced a good cross which home 'keeper Clements punched clear, but only to the feet of McAvoy who fired in from 20 yards to give the Bloaters the lead – and the points.

In the same division, Diss Town went down 3-1 at home to Halstead Town and Dereham Town Reserves lost 1-0 at Wivenhoe Town.

The top teams in the division all won with Adam Hampson's first-half goal enough for Wivenhoe Town – and victory over Halstead Town on Friday night will see the Dragons just four points shy of a definite return to the Premier Division.

In the Premier Division, Norwich United – who were without a game – saw their lead cut. Stanway Rovers' 2-1 home win over Swaffham Town has seen them move to within seven points of the Planters – and that will be down to four tomorrow night if the Essex side win at fourth-placed Felixstowe & Walton United.

Swaffham were two goals behind at Stanway after 18 minutes, although Alex Vincent did get a vital goal back with 11 minutes remaining.

Felixstowe's own challenge faltered on Saturday after they were held 0-0 at home by Gorleston. The away side's point ended a run of five league defeats and halted their slide towards the relegation places.

Kirkley & Pakefield's match at Godmanchester Rovers was the only one in all the divisions to be postponed because of an unfit pitch.

Fakenham Town remain firmly rooted in the relegation places despite holding Ipswich Wanderers to a 1-1 draw. The Ghosts led for most of the match through Sam Garner, but in the end were indebted to a last-minute penalty miss by Wanderers for their share of the spoils.

n Wisbech Town stretched their unbeaten run to eight games with a 4-2 win at Oadby.

Both teams finished the United Counties Premier League game with 10 men, with Wisbech's Paul Cousins dismissed for two yellow cards. Wisbech's goals came from an Adam Millson penalty, two from Matthew Sparrow and Jon Fairweather.
