Norwich cyclo-cross rider Jimmy Piper settled into winning ways in the 50-plus age category when he eased off the front of a big field at Colchester... and his rivals could do nothing about it.

It was Piper's third win in a row, but he does not – yet – lead the 50+ League. That honour rests with Dave Copland (Ipswich BC), who combines being the League results computer guru with consistent high positions.

In contrast to the mud at Basildon last week the course at Hillyfields was fast, dry and dusty with a headwind on some grass sectors that might otherwise have provided brief respite on an otherwise demanding course.

In the women's race Alison Hogg (Push Sport) was third and top Norfolk rider, overhauling Harley Pell (LIV AWOL) before half-distance, and finishing 1:40 down on winner Lauren Higham.

James Madgwick won the hour-long senior men's race, where Push Sport's James Pickering, just out of the Junior ranks, opened his 'cross season with a fifth place out of 70 starters.

After the first four League rounds the Barnett sisters from King's Lynn head both Youth Girls categories – Bethany being top Under 16 and Florence heading the U14 table.

In the Vets 40-49 race Shaun Aldous (Renvale RT) managed to get among the previously dominant Forest Side Riders team (that's Epping Forest).

Matt Webber won from Ben Lewis but Aldous was just 13 seconds down on the winner. Interesting times may lie ahead. Paul Groombridge (Push Sport) who was fifth is also not to be discounted.

Matt Senter (20:03) and Kay Burgess (24:33) – now teammates in VeloVelocity – were the winners in the King's Lynn CC 10 on Saturday

Lewis Pendle ended his road racing season with a fourth place in the Team OnForm event near Chelmsford.

In mid race Pendle bridged across a 20 second gap to a leading break which he rightly judged had the potential to stay away for the rest of the race.

Pendle led out as the break charged to the finish flag

'But three got round me,' said the VC Norwich rider.
