Swardeston made it through to the quarter-finals of the national Royal London Club Championship for the second year running yesterday after recording an emphatic 75-run win over Wanstead and Snaresbrook at The Common.

After winning the toss and opting to bat first the hosts quickly stumbled to 11-2 before a third wicket stand of 58 between Stephen Gray (33) and Joe Gatting (37) got them back on track.

After Swardeston had lost another couple of quick wickets youngster Freddie Ruffell then took centre stage, hammering 108 in just 69 balls, with six fours and eight sixes, to take the game away from the Essex side. When Ruffell eventually went Matthew Taylor kept up the good work, finishing on an unbeaten 57 in 43 balls to help lift his side up to 296-9 in their 45 overs.

Needing to score at well over six an over to win Wanstead and Snaresbrook ended up finishing well short after being dismissed for 221 in the 38th over. It was a solid bowling display from the home side, with George Walker taking three wickets and Mark Thomas and Gatting two apiece.
