After both tasting victory at the weekend, West Norfolk and Swaffham go into today's Greene King Eastern Counties Division One schedule in confident mood.

Division Two champions Swaffham got the monkey off their backs by picking up their first-ever points at this level, at the third attempt, by winning 22-5 at fellow promoted outfit Broadland - Great Yarmouth.

And they welcome Harwich & Dovercourt to Norfolk Pickenham Road knowing they face a side who have only picked up one point more than them this term.

Chairman Ian Milligan said: 'Saturday was an impressive response from Swaffham who had found the opening few weeks of life in EC1 tough. To get such a comprehensive win away from home has given the squad a huge boost.

'It was encouraging to see the set piece dominant and the defensive structures work well. Harwich have lost one and won one so far this season and the game promises to be a tight affair.'

Adam Potter and Jordan Mustard's try, the latter a near full-pitch length effort, put Swaffham in control at the break with Steve Greenwood kicking addition points. A 17-0 half-time lead was increased thanks to Paddy Callaby's late dash into the left corner.

The feel-good factor was always being felt by fierce rivals West Norfolk who kept up their impressive 100pc start to the campaign.

Nigel Richardson's team made it three wins from three this turn by beating Ipswich YM 36-22 at Gatehouse Lane.

Facing a large and powerful Suffolk outfit, Wests played some delightful running rugby to take a 19-10 lead into the break. They extended that further after the interval.

Brad Cook, captain Lawrence Savage, and Jake Richardson crashed over with Olly Denton converting two of the three first-half tries. Second-half scores from Ross Biggs and Max Rust sealed the win with Cook displaying his kicking expertise to confirm the triumph.

West, who beat Swaffham a fortnight ago, have arguably their toughest test of the new campaign at the weekend when they visit Fenland rivals Ely. They sit one place, and three points, behind the Norfolk table-toppers.

West coach Chris Bird said: 'Saturday was another good display. We just need to cut down on our mistakes as we look to take opponents out of the game. 'Reducing these mistakes will ultimately limit our oppositions' chances.'

Ely's only dropped points came during a 13-13 home draw with Newmarket on September 21.
