Sprowston Superstocks rider Jake Newstead was lucky to escape any serious repercussions on a washed out weekend at Oulton Park.

The Team Tinklers racer, who took his first 600 podium on his home circuit at Snetterton, at the start of the month, was running well in fourth during qualifying before landing with a bump.

'Things were going very well, we picked up where we left off at Snetterton and in first qualifying we decided to make a push for glory,' said Newstead.

'I went out and pushed at our maximum but unfortunately things ended badly when I high-sided coming round the fast right-hander Druids at around a 100mph. Fortunately I avoided serious injury but it left us with a busy evening.'

In the end that evening's work was in vain anyway, after heavy rain cut short the meeting – even limiting the British Superbikes to one race.

Newstead did at least have one thing to cheer at the weekend – taking the Snetterton Speedy Spirit award for his efforts in Norfolk earlier in the month.

'It feels great to win the award as it was my home round and it just shows how much support I had at that event,' said Newstead. 'I knew it would be a tough race after qualifying 10th and it is great for everyone in the team.'

As for Newstead's Tuddenham team-mate David Gowen, he had to have an entire engine change on the same night as Newstead's prang. But the experienced head got it together with third in the shoot-out race to qualify for Sunday's outing.

And starting from 32nd in appalling conditions, Gowen made his BMW stick when others could not to come home an excellent 20th – equalling his best result at Superstocks 1000 level and some achievement given the conditions.

Brundall racer Matt Layt's 1000 race did not go so well, ending of the first lap. North Walsham's Anthony Rogers came home 23rd in the Supersport Championship race – converting to a fifth in the Supersport Cup category.

The riders will reconvene at Brands Hatch GP on the first weekend of August.

Josh Brookes and veteran rider Michael Rutter completed the podium, with round eight extended to three races after Oulton's wash out.
