Southwold maintain promotion push with comfortable away win

They took an early lead when James Hall dropped down on the ball after his side had won a line-out and driven for the line.

The visitors soon doubled their lead six minutes later when, after another long period of possession, Sammy Harmer went over wide on the left.

Newmarket couldn't get a foothold in the game but they battled hard to keep Southwold at bay and at half-time the score was still 10-0.

The second half saw a different Wold take the pitch and they quickly added five points when their pack simply steam-rollered the Newmarket pack back over their own line and it was easy for Jonny Mayall at No 8 to drop on the ball.

Wold's tails however were well and truly now up and substitute Matty Howell, on his first ball receipt, smashed through three or four tackles and raced 40 metres towards the corner flag before being caught only a metre short. Backing him up was young Jobe Brooks who ran in to score to the right of the posts, Harmer converted and Wold were up by 22 points

It wasn't long before Callum Anthony at fly-half broke through the Newmarket back line and put Harmer in for his second try and his conversion again sailed over and it was 29-0 in Wold's favour. Howell, full of aggressive running, then broke the Newmarket line once more, and Harmer ran in for his hat-trick.

Wold pressed and pressed as Newmarket's valiant efforts to stop the black and gold attacking train began to take their toll.

The visitors' final score came after the cheekiest move and try of the game.

Newmarket's backs were penalised with five minutes left just inside their 22 for offside and young Ben Felton at scrum-half ambled over to the spot where the referee was indicating the offence had taken place. He looked purposely disinterested but suddenly took a tap penalty and sidestepped quickly through the sleeping group of defenders to score a under the posts. Harmer gratefully slotted his third conversion to go with his three tries and the game was done.
