In the tandem race, onlookers at half distance wondered if an upset was in the offing when the Anglia Velo mixed pair of Andy and Cathy Hutchison rounded the turn two seconds up on Jon Surtees and Andy Page. However, on the return leg the heavier all-male pair punched into the headwind to good effect and gained 16 seconds to finish in 19:36. Nevertheless the Hutchinsons' 19:50 is only 18 seconds off the east district mixed tandem record.

Laura Robinson (VC Norwich) took the women's award with 24:29, ahead of Tracey Prewer (VC Baracchi) 26:14. Competitors enjoyed a fast ride to the turn but "we all suffered on the way back," said Stuart Howlett, of King's Lynn CC, who took a surprise third place in 21:27, ahead of Bobby De'ath (CC Breckland) who was fourth in 21:38.

Patrick Harbord, of the Lowestoft-based Baracchi club, contested the East Anglian grasstrack double bill, taking seventh place in the eight kilometre and winning the minor final in the 400 metres on the sweeping bends at Bedfield on Saturday - but ran out of track in the 400 metre sprint on the long straights and tight ends at Bury St Edmunds the next day.

At Bury, spectators who lined the straight in picnic chairs saw Nathan Colman, of West Suffolk Wheelers, team up with his sister Esther and northerner John McClelland to come within eight-tenths of a second of beating winners Welwyn Wheelers in the team sprint, where teams of three must include one lady and one junior.

Norwich Flyer Abi Hill won the over-25 women's BMX race in the nationals at Tredegar in Wales. Other Flyers making their mark included Steven Williams, who took second in the masters, Jake Cheetham, fourth in 15/16s and second on cruiser, brother Josh, seventh in the juniors, and Alan Hill, second in the 30-39 cruisers.

Australian Peter Tutty was among 61 cyclists taking part in West Suffolk Wheelers 100km Audax from Bury to Bressingham and back. Next week he will be hoping to cover 12 times that distance in the Queen of Audax rides - Paris-Brest-Paris. The Bury club also offered a 200 km grand tour of mid-Suffolk, Nayland to Eye, which attracted more than 50 entrants.

The next local Audax will be one of the many events, from cyclo-cross to an exhibition of cycling erotica, that will be associated with Mildenhall Cycling Rally over the August Bank Holiday weekend. See www.mildenhallrally.org.uk for the full programme.

On Sunday morning, East Anglians will be watching to see how Helen Wyman, Emilie Fisher and Emma Pooley fare in competition with Nicole Cooke and other top riders in the women's National Championship Road Race promoted by API/Metrow at Saffron Walden. The API club have stepped in to run the event after floods prevented the planned event in Yorkshire.
