Chelsea loan player Smith has been sidelined since suffering ankle ligament damage on Norwich's pre-season tour of Holland.
Since then he has been treated by Chelsea's medical staff, but should be ready to resume training next week.
He then faces a week or two of rehabilitation before playing - with his name pencilled in for the October 15 trip to Portman Road.
“He is doing all his work, but then he needs all his football fitness work, simple things like blocked tackles and the sharp movements,” said Grant.
“Jimmy will be like a new signing; he gives us something different. He likes to play in the opposition's half - I am sure the fans will enjoy watching him.”
