The East District 25-mile time trial title was taken by Matthew Smith (VeloVelocity) in 51:17 – a course record for the exposed Wisbech bypass course, achieved on a day of gusty winds and threatening storm-clouds, but thankfully only a few spits of rain.

Second was 2013 champion Daniel Bloy in 52:53 while North Norfolk Wheeler Charlie Nurse stepped up to the medal list with 53:34 for third spot.

Less than 24 hours earlier Smith had entered the pantheon of sub-50 minutes 25-milers with a winning ride of 48:34 in the Zak Carr Memorial 25 on the Newmarket bypass. In the same event James Trenchard (Godric/Becks) put in a personal best effort of 51:35 for 14th place. The wind, again gusty, and traffic levels were unusually variable; Thetford fast-man Dave Green was two clear minutes off his PB with 52:30 for 23rd spot.

Trenchard (20:20) took second in the Breckland evening 10-miler at Attleborough, where David McGaw (Cambridge CC, 19:35) was the winner on a calm evening. Charlie Nurse and Steve Gorbutt tied on 20:34 for third place while there were personal bests for young CC Brecklanders Declan Davis (21:30) and Harvey Hall (22:11), while Louis Gyde recorded 21:33.

Ken Jolliffe, organiser of the Lotus Series and many other outstanding and innovatory events, led the riders out of Diss Market Place at the start of Revolution Event's Bomber Ride 110km Sportive. For once free of responsibilities, he was able to enjoy the intricate route and was introduced to a museum – the 93rd BG Museum Station 104 at Hardwick – which he had not previously known about. There was noticeably not a saddlebag to be seen as around 200 modern cyclists set out in groups up the steep climb towards St Nicholas Street and the open road.

Also just over 100km was the Iceni 100 Audax which took 58 riders via Oxborough and East Wretham to a tea stop at World Horse Welfare at Snetterton before returning to Swaffham.

Norwich Amateur BC's Jason Turner put in an opening bid for the East District Best All-Rounder title when he covered a provisional 274 miles in a bumpy Newbury RC 12-Hour. This new event must have had special dispensation to use the same stretch of ageing but sheltered dual carriageway between Alton and Farnham over a dozen times. Turner's ride included stops to retrieve his bottle cage and to bolt it back on his bike.

Sophie Wright from Horsford took her new Team CCN top onto the podium at the National XC MTB races at Margham Park, Cardiff, when she took third place in the Youth Female race.

Great Yarmouth CC's Emma Codling won the Under-16s race on closed roads around the streets of St Ives on Saturday evening with sister Alice not far behind. In an evening of individual time trials at Lotus, Alice was just quickest over 11 miles with 31:22 to Emma's 32:13.

There were big entries of youth riders in West Suffolk Wheelers grass track meet, including those from CC Ashwell, whose members Mark Fraser and Mark Wyer are behind the new website Youth Cycle Sport 'the home of cycle racing on the web for young riders and their parents' at www.youthcyclesport.co.uk

Top local in a bunch sprint finish to the Walden Velo Road Race was Tom Gillingwater (Strada Sport) who was eighth.
