North Walsham's Colin Abbs won the Norfolk Summer Smallbore Open Meeting at Corpusty on an occasion when tied scores were the order of the day.

After the 50 metre element, it was Bury St Edmunds' Steve Holder and S Spindler who made the best start, dropping only 13 points in their 40 shots to count for a total of 387, three ahead of the 384 by A Pamment of Colchester, while Abbs was a further point adrift. Back at 100 yards, it was Abbs whose nerve held the strongest, his score of 393 a clear four points to the good of Spindler and Pamment. While Abbs and Spindler were left tied on a total of 776, the former's superior score at the longer distance gave him the trophy.

The competition was equally tight in B Class. While Wymondham's C Cain was the clear winner with 773, John Pearman's 765 only gave him second place over Gresham's School pupil Ed Johnson by virtue of a better long range total. Johnson's younger brother Roland took C Class with a final score of 770 pushing team-mate Matthew Purdy into second on 764. Roland eclipsed everybody else at 50 metres, dropping a mere eight points, earning him the right represent Norfolk in the Champion of Champions final at the National Smallbore Rifle Association meeting at Bisley in August.
