Halvergate favourites to advance in Summer Cup after big first leg victory

Halvergate established a big first leg lead at home to Watton in their Summer Cup preliminary round tie.

The visitors were cut adrift in all four games and will find it difficult to overcome an 8-0 points and 56 shots deficit when the second leg is played at Watton.

Anne Baker, Ray Lamb & Robbie Lamb opened with a 21-11 win against Roger Braham’s triple while Kerry Greenacre, Keith Baker & Keith Cooke beat Malcolm Southgate’s triple 26-7. The second half was also comfortably won with Robbie Lamb’s triple winning 19-5 against Daphne Braham and Keith Cooke’s triple beating Roger Braham 22-9. The winners will face First Bus in the first round.

League action kicked off with two newly promoted sides, Forncett and Watton, meeting in the top flight. When they met last season in Division Two Forncett collected a maximum 8-0 win and this year’s meeting went the same way.

Tony Ottewell, Brian Preece & Rebecca Humphreys beat Malcom Southgate’s triple 33-7 and Linda Preece, Carol Lock & Peter Lock beat Roger Braham 20-12. After the break Peter Lock beat Southgate 19-11 while Rebecca Humphreys beat Roger Braham 31-6.

Defending champions Bob Carter opened the season in style winning 8-0 away to Watton and racking up 101 shots against Watton’s 23. John Turner, Jason Woods & David Lamb beat Roger Braham’s triple 30-3 and Nigel Willard, Melly Woods & Gary Best won 22-8 against Malcolm Southgate.

In the second half Gary Best’s triple beat Roger Braham 28-4 while David Lamb’s triple beat Malcolm Southgate 21-8.

Thorpe Marriott and Diss began life in Division Two after last season’s relegation and met in their opening fixture. When they played each other last year at Thorpe Marriott the match finished all square at 4-4 and this year proved to be a repeat. Marriott’s Jenny Walker, Mandy Marshall & John Jarvis opened with what turned out to be the biggest win of the night beating Ann Bidulph, Angela Bond & Tony Oram 21-3 but Colin Smith, Peggy Bertrum & Bill Francis responded for Diss by beating Tony Turner’s triple 16-13.

In the second half Morris Taylor, Graham Atter & Terry Newby added another win for Diss beating George Clarke’s triple 16-13 but Sheila Redwood, Peter Walker & Tony Turner made it a 4-4 draw by beating Russell Davidson’s triple 17-11.

Norfolk Over 60s were away to Kent Invicta for the first leg of their annual shield challenge match where they went down by 40-32 leaving just an eight-point deficit to make up in the home leg at Hingham in June.

The Bure League AGM will take place at Woodbastwick on Thursday, June 7 and the Tens League AGM will take place at Hevingham on Friday, June 22, both meetings commence at 7.30pm.
