Gary Setchell refused to rue bad luck as King's Lynn Town's 100pc start to the season came to an end at Sheffield FC on Saturday.

The Linnets struck the woodwork three times, but slipped to 2-0 defeat thanks to a Charlie Weir header and a Steve Woolley penalty.

It was promoted Lynn's first defeat in their third Evo-Stik Division One South match of the campaign and Setchell admitted the best team won on the day.

He said: 'In all fairness we hit the woodwork three times, had a good go, and the lads didn't give up, but the best team got the three points if I'm being honest.

'I think Sheffield are a very good side. They were a final ball away from opening us up more than what we were to them. The disappointing thing is, although we hit the woodwork so many times, which is unlucky in any game, the two goals we conceded weren't great.

'One from a corner and one from a soft penalty is the bit that hurts more than the missed chances and the woodwork. But we gave a very good account of ourselves against what I consider to be a team that will definitely be in the play-offs.'

Defenders Ross Watson and Ryan Fryatt crashed efforts again the post and bar in the first 45 minutes before substitute Jason Turner did the same as Lynn looked to reverse a 1-0 half-time deficit.

However, a 77th-minute penalty from Woolley ended Lynn's chances of preserving their early-season record – with star striker Russell Dunkley limping off with a calf injury with about 10 minutes left.

Setchell said: 'The Brigg game (on Monday) was off, we trained hard in the week, but we weren't flat out in the first half. It looked like we were 85pc and Sheffield were more dominant.

'Second half we came out and dominated possession a little bit better and it was an open game. It was probably a good game for the neutral to watch. Perhaps first half we showed them a little bit too much respect as they're a good side with good players.

'Turns (Turner) come on and was very good second half so that's given me something to think about. We had a big blow though because Russell Dunkley looks like he's pulled his calf. Hopefully Phil Ward (physio) can get him back for Tuesday, but it's looking very unlikely at the minute.

'We'll have to assess it, though, because there's no point risking him and losing him for four weeks as he's a big part of what we try and do.

'We've had a reasonable start. We've got six points from nine. But now people will stop talking about league championships and the play-offs and let us get on with the job.'

Lynn, 10th, will be looking to bounce back at home to Carlton, eighth, tomorrow night. Like the Linnets, they lost on Saturday – 2-1 at home to Halesowen Town – but have won both of their away games in the league this term.
