King's Lynn Stars 40, Ashley Jones Select 52

King's Lynn racer Kevin Doolan sparkled on his Norfolk Arena homecoming in last night's Ashley Jones memorial meeting.

Doolan shared top billing with Elite League ace Ty Proctor in the seasonal curtain-raiser to honour his former Stars team mate and good friend Jones.

Lynn's key heat leader inflicted Proctor's only defeat of the evening as Rob Lyon's treble winners deferred to a powerful visiting select team.

Lyon's new boys Joe Haines plus untried reserve duo Casper Wortmann and Ricky Wallace got an invaluable chance to step up their Saddlebow education ahead of Rye House's Premier Trophy visit next week.

Jones' younger brother, Mark, endured a difficult outing skippering the opposition in memory of his brother, who died in a racing accident in his native Australia five years ago after helping Lynn lift the Young Shield and KO Cup.

Norfolk bred racer Olly Allen oozed Elite League class in the opening half before paying for a sluggish gate in a heavyweight heat 13 that paired him and team mate Proctor against Doolan and Tomas Topinka.

Proctor prevailed to down Doolan on a tactical raid before repeating the punishment when the quartet re-opposed in the finale.

The Wolverhampton ace and former Stars' guest signalled his intent with a sharp opener to hold off Topinka - celebrating on the finish line with fist pump.

Jones locked up into turn two and then Lynn debutant Wallace tumbled on the top bend as Simon Lambert pocketed the reserves.

Haines trapped to a sub 60 tour on his Norfolk Arena bow, with Kozza Smith offering solid support to shut ex-Stars' veterans Chris Schramm and Chris Mills.

Allen repelled Doolan in a quality heat four duel, with Wallace's woes continuing in the rear.

Proctor cashed in on a late slip from Haines to squeeze through a sliver of space down the back straight and move the visitors four clear on the scoresheets.

Jones picked up extra drive exiting turn two then clipped team mate Allen - but the Team GB international dusted himself down to claim the re-run.

Doolan opened his account with a heat seven cruise but Lambert and the fast-gating James Brundle shut out Linus Eklof in the next.

Lynn's young guns Haines and Smith were strictly the warm-up for Allen who reduced heat nine to a procession from the tapes.

Topinka treated the home crowd to his first flag and mid-race wheelie display of the season before Doolan eclipsed Proctor in the next to underline Lynn's potential top end strength this campaign.

Mills stoutly defended Smith's foray in a re-run heat 12 before Doolan's tactical helped the hosts nullify Proctor.

Lambert and Schramm combined to settle the meeting in the penultimate tour with a decisive maximum and Proctor swooped from the outside gate to dictate the finale.

Stars: Topinka 9+2, Eklof 3, Smith 6+1, Haines 7+1, Doolan 13+1, Wortmann 2, Wallace 0.

Ashley Jones select: Proctor 14, Brundle 6+1, Mills 6+2, Schramm 7, Allen 9, Jones 1, Lambert 9+2.
