Things have carried on in the same vein as recent weeks with the north and east Norfolk beaches giving the most consistent sport.

Traditionally this set of spring tides usually produce a few better fish and we're seeing a few of those in catch reports with 4-5lb bass not uncommon anywhere from Cley down to Yarmouth.

If I had to pick a couple of consistent beaches though, they would have to be the shingle at Weybourne under the cliffs, and Cart Gap on the east Norfolk sand.

Both have produced some cracking bass and plenty of school bass to keep rods knocking, fish have come to lug and crab baits, though crab does seem to sort out the slightly better fish. It's a bit quieter below Yarmouth and down to Lowestoft, there are a few school bass, whiting, and occasional spring codling but they are not showing in the numbers they are further up the coast.

Further down and round to Orford and again there are a few whiting and school bass with some dogs and odd codling on the Ness.

The deep water beaches at Aldeburgh and Orford always produce a few good fish in the spring and anglers targeting bass with crab around Yarmouth and Lowestoft are often surprised by some decent codling or a few smoothound pups at this time of the year.

In my opinion May really is the month to get out there and do a bit, your chances aren't as good again for a proper lump until the autumn.

• Dereham's Peter White, a regular on the end of Southwold Pier, hauled out 11 bass on his most recent visit – three of them over 3lb – along with some nice whiting, flounder and codling. This followed another rewarding session two weeks ago when his haul included a 4lb cod.
