Forecasters were thankfully wrong with predictions of a rainy end to East Anglia Tennis & Squash Club's fourth annual Open Doubles Charity Tournament, sponsored by Libby Ferris Flowers.

The 25 ladies pairs were divided into five boxes of five for the initial round-robin stage, from which the top two pairs and next best three runners-up went through to the knockout round.

The semi-finals pitched Jane Ray and Sarah Jermy from Diss against Frances Hornor and Holly Forster from Brooke while Mary Ogden and Heather Bottomley from Cromer faced Jo Watkins and Lesley Penniket from Stanmore. The Diss and Cromer pairs prevailed, and their one-set final was a lot closer than the 6-2 score might suggest with lots of long rallies before Jermy and Ray claimed the trophy. Head coach Derek Perry orchestrated the day, which saw a raffle in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support raise just shy of £400.

The next tournament, sponsored by VANILLA, is on Wednesday, June 12 and, in response to players who work and can never play mid-week, the ninth Louise Willgrass Memorial Tournament will be held on Sunday, September 22. A mixed-sports camp will be provided for youngsters.
