Marek Saganowski has proved to be a scoring sensation for Southampton - but he could well have been banging them in for Norwich City this season as a replacement for Robert Earnshaw.

The Pole was recommended to Peter Grant, but the City boss decided not to take a chance - and has been reminded of his decision every time Saganowski has scored for Southampton, a tally which currently stands at 10 in 11 star6ts.

Saints boss George Burley took Saganowski on loan from French side Troyes at the end of January and his goalscoring exploits have attracted the attentions of Newcastle, Bolton and Manchester City.

Fortunately, Grant won't be reminded of his prowess today, the 28-year-old ruled out because of injury - but his decision still touches a nerve.

“When Earnie got injured a friend said to me, 'have you seen the boy Saganowski?” he explainewd.

“I said I had, but only on tape. He was saying, 'do you want to take a chance?' and I said I hadn't seen him personally. He marked my card on him and I didn't take up the gamble because I wasn't here long enough.

“He said he was worth seeing, he'd seen him in Poland and then he went to France, so he said he was worth having a look at. Sure as fate, every time he phones me he says, 'did you see Saganowski scored?”
