Frankie Dettori's trip to Great Yarmouth proved fruitless yesterday as globetrotting youngster William Buick took the feature race of the day.

Dettori was on Godolphin's Inthar in the Class Three handicap over almost a mile and a half and looked to have a good chance when taking over from early leader Three Bards three furlongs out.

But Buick, who rode in three different countries on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, produced Ed Walker's Ruscello perfectly and took over for a comfortable success at 5-2 with 6-4 favourite Three Bards rallying for second and Dettori, on his only ride of the day, having to settle for third.

The Ed Walker-trained Ruscello, bought from Sir Michael Stoute for 20,000 guineas in April, was winning for the third time since May.

'In the last couple of weeks I've had about six runners and four winners,' said owner Laurence Bellman.

'I was very worried as at the start he was a bit keen and coming around the bend.

'I thought they'd gone a bit fast, but I'm so glad. Ed has done a great job with this horse, and all the others I've got with him.

'Faithfilly won at Deauville last week, the first black type winner I've ever had.'All eyes will be on Tom Queally this afternoon when he rides unbeaten wonder horse Frankel at York, but yesterday he thrilled backers with a perfect ride on trainer John Dunlop's Mafeteng to take the one mile six furlong maiden handicap.

Mafeteng, sent off at 11-2, was restrained early on but Queally came from last to first when he pounced a furlong out to head long-time leader Bohemian Rhapsody who held on to finish second.

'The step up in trip helped. We ran her over shorter at Pontefract and felt a bit further would help,' said Queally. 'I just had to give her a smack or two to help her keep her concentration.

'It's nice that she won and the owner got a huge buzz out of it.'

Veteran trainer Clive Brittain scored in the Banham Poultry Handicap with Afkar at 7-2, well ridden by Silvestre de Sousa, who beat six-times course winner Rough Rock while the seven furlong handicap went to Stuart Williams' Mount Mayday.

Mickael Barzalona got a real tune out of the handicap debutant to score at 15-2 from Indiana Guest, a winner at last week's meeting, and top weight Roman Myst.

Shane Kelly drove home Ambitious Boy in the six-furlong maiden in what proved a real Tote Placepot buster. The Reg Hollingshead trained gelding won at 10-1 with Miakora, runner-up at the course last week, second again at 16-1, and Theresnoneedfordat third at 12-1.

The opening race, a five-runner maiden over six furlongs, produced one of the easiest wins seen at the course all season. The 11-10 favourite Salacia, under Royston ffrench for trainer Ismail Mohammed, bounced out of the stalls in front and pulled away to win by a country mile ahead of Sushi and Bull Bay.

The finale, over a mile for apprentice jockeys, saw market support for Richard Fahey's Siberian Belle significant as Laura Barry took the honours on the bay filly at a well-backed 11-2 with Percythepinto second and Putin third.

Next meeting is on Sunday when a crowd of around 7,000 is expected for the annual Bank Holiday weekend family fun day. First race is at 2pm.
