In the veterans' match staged on Beccles Quay Lagoon, Norwich rod David Roe heaved out two spectacular bonus fish that won him top honours.

One was a quite spectacular winter tench of 5lb 12oz and the other a hefty bream of 5lb that boosted his total to 23lb oz, well ahead of runner-up Joe Beckham with 14lb 1oz of smaller fry.

Beckham, the match organiser and former river authority bailiff, who has seen some splendid fish in his time, declared the tench was 'a real beauty'. He added: 'It took considerable angling skill to get these two specimens out on light pole tackle so David Roe was a worthy winner.'

At Hill Farm, Banham, Stephen Rouse (Martham) maintained his form with a 30lb 13oz winner to extend his impressive winning sequence in this event into the new year.

At the Barford midweek silver fish contest, Tony Gibbons (NDAA) weighed in 31lb 8oz of skimmer bream for top honours, while at Mill Farm Lake the best catch of the winter came on Monday's open event, won by Dereham's John Rush with 49lb 12oz.
