Rob Newton has extended his contract with Northamptonshire.

The Norfolk-raised batsman, who previously played for Swardeston, was out of contract but has signed new terms through until the end of 2017.

The 26-year-old played in 10 County Championship matches last season, scoring 810 runs at an average of 50.62. He scored three centuries, most notably an unbeaten 202 against Leicestershire – his highest first class score.

'Rob finished the season very strongly with important runs at the top of the order,' Northants head coach David Ripley told his club's website.

'He had a fine 50-over competition too and offers strong competition for white ball places. He is an academy graduate who I first saw as a 12-year-old so I am looking forward to seeing him in many years to come in Northants colours.'
