Hurling lead weights attached to a line on dry land may not be everyone's idea of angling but nevertheless it was a skill our nation's fishermen put to good use at the World Casting Championships in France where they returned triumphantly with team gold and bronze as well as 19 other medals for individuals.

Of local interest, David Richardson from Carlton Coville, won gold in the 150 gram event with a throw of 259.14 meters and silver in the 175 gram class.

Senior committee man of the United Kingdom Surf Casting Federation Colin Howlett of Lyng declared it was a marvellous result for England.

'Dave Richardson was a member of the England B team and his was a fantastic effort beating the Belgian world champion and world record holder Danny Moeskops.

'Danny regularly competes in the UK SF events and has not been beaten for many years.'
